On the 18th of July 2019 the session for the presentation of the Gender Equality In Higher Education Institutions project was held at ISCSP-ULisboa. This project is funded by EEA Grants 2014-2014 and promoted by Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior (DGES). Its operating entity is the Comission for Citizenshio and Gender Equality (CIG). Its scientific officer is the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies (CIEG/ISCSP-Ulisboa). GE-HEI project - Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions has a partnership with the Institute for Gender, Equality and Difference at the University of Iceland (RIKK) and with the Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior (A3ES).
In comparison with the the other OECD countries, Portugal has a high number of women with advanced education levels (bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees) and a relatively high number of women researchers in areas traditionally male-oriented, such as sciences, technologies and mathematics. However, this women's participation decreases greatly when we analyze management positions and higher academic positions in the Higher Education Institutions (Departments' Offices, Rectory and Vice-Rectories, Catedráticos/as, etc.). One of the goals of this project is to understand the factors that are able to explain the inequalities at the level of the Higher Education Institutions, to then better identify and fight them. To accomplish this goal, the project will analyse thoroughly these dynamics and elaborate a set of recommendations to the development of gender equality criteria in Higher Education Institutions.
